Windows update and Administrator Account

Posted by admin on Apr 29th, 2007

Running Windows Vista Ultimate on a Dell. I cannot set my Update to automatic because it says some settings are managed by the Administrator. I AM the Administrator. I cannot get the updates to configure correctly because the Automatic Update is greyed out. What can I do?

Click Start, type gpedit.msc and press ENTER Goto the following branch:Computer Configuration | Administrative Templates | Windows Components | Windows UpdateDoubleclick "Configure Automatic Updates" Set it to "Not configured"Note: If it is already set to "Not configured", enable the Policy and revert the setting back to "Not configured". This resets any registry based Policy if set already. I tried to do as you suggested but it couldn't open the gpedit.msc. I went into sys32 and found group editor. Tried to run it and a dos window opened and said that the update was sucessful. I don't seem to have gredit in my version do I? "Ramesh, MSMVP" wrote:

Linda, gpedit.msc is most definitely included in Ultimate. Are you by any chance joined to a Domain? Jane, not plain ;) 64 bit enabled :) Batteries not included. Braincell on vacation ;) "Linda"

Jane,Thanks for the suggestion. No I am not part of a Domain. I looked for gpedit.msc and couldn't find it in my folders. I hit start and run and typed in the command but it says it can't find gpedit.msc. Thanks again."Jane C" wrote:

I did try it and it didn't work. I looked in system32 and I have gpedit.dll and that is the only gpedit folder I have. Thank You."Ramesh, MSMVP" wrote:

Group Policy Editor is certainly included in Windows Vista Ultimate. Type "winver" in Start, Search box and press ENTER. This shows the Operating System / edition installed in your computer. To remove the AU/WU restrictions, you may use this REG: winhelponline.com/fixes/wupolicy_remove.regDownload wupolicy_remove.reg and save to Desktop. Rightclick "wupolicy_remove.reg" and choose Merge Click "Continue", and click "Yes" to confirm the Merge. I know I have Vista Home Premium....but I checked anyway. It says Windows Vista Home Premium 6 Build 6000. I merged it and don't know where to go from here. Thank You"Ramesh, MSMVP" wrote:

Linda, You said "Running Windows Vista Ultimate on a Dell." in your original post. Anyway, the REG file applies to all editions of XP/Vista. See if you're able to access the Automatic Updates options after applying the REG file. Ramesh, I did merge the file and something worked because I can get the Windows Update Service to work on Auto again if I want it to. By the way I don't have gpedit.msc. But really I don't care I guess. I tried to run it again and the popup said I don't have it on this computer. I certainly didn't delete it. Since I have the gpedit.dll its confusing to try and figure out why it is gone, but everything is working fine and I want to THank You for our help. Linda"Ramesh, MSMVP" wrote:
