Windows Explorer Fault

Posted by admin on Oct 11th, 2006

I have just purchased a new laptop installed with Windows Vista. I have been attempting to transfer some files and folders via a USB storage device. I open it, select the files I want to transfer to my Documents folder in Vista, select 'Send To' by pressing the right mouse button, and then selecting "Documents", only to get an immediate message "Windows Explorer has stopped working" and "windows is trying to fix the problem", which it doesn't.Am I doing something wrong? Is the problem something I can fix?Grateful for advice. (I'm beginning to wish I'd stuck with XP..........)Allen

Hi Allen,It sounds like a driver problem. Have you connected/installed other USB devices since you bought your laptop? I would look in System to make sure you don't have any driver problems as a starting point. Larry Maturo "Allen Hull"

Well I'll try. Anyone any ideas where else I can seek advice if checking in the "System" Files doesn't bring any joy. Think I wish I'd stuck to XP!Allen "Larry Maturo" wrote:

Check the system events to see why Explorer crashed. I have a similar problem and the system events show,Windows cannot access the file C:\Users\Name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer\thumbcache_256.db for one of the following reasons: there is a problem with the network connection, the disk that the file is stored on, or the storage drivers installed on this computer; or the disk is missing. Windows closed the program Windows Explorer because of this error.I deleted all the .db files and everything goes back to normal. You can also use the disk cleanup to remove the thumbnail cache."Allen Hull"

I've now checked with Sony. They tell me I have to download the "Windows Easy Transfer" program from my new (SONY) computer, copy it to a disc or USB storage device, copy it to the old computer, and then folllow the instructions. I assume it carries out some conversion or other which Vista can understand. I tried it yesterday, but failed to select the few files I wanted (I assume you can) and it started going through everything. Took hours. So I stopped it, and will have another go again today, in the hope I can select the files I want. It's not a convenient system at all. I would have assumed that you could just copy files from the old computer to a memory stick or whatever, shove it in the new computer, and click on "send to", but apparently not. Very irritating. That system certainly works if you want to export and import your address book. No worries at all.If anyone knows of a better system, I'd love to know!Allen Hull "Programatix" wrote:
