where has all my drivespace gone?

Posted by admin on Dec 15th, 2006

I have a 300gb hdd (shows as 279gb) but when I check how much space has been used, my system says that I have only got 219gb left. All I have done is installed vista x 64 bit and office 2003 so how has 60gb been used. I have deleted the windows.old folder but it has only restored about 6gb. Where is my missing HD space?

Well as you have a windows.old folder I presume you did an upgrade, so there may be a lot of old program files lying around. Then you will have another 2 to 4 gig being used by swap file and hibernate files then all of vista and office... it all soon adds up....nobody said that this stuff was lightweight & trim :) "T5"

And what about "System restore" switched on eating your hard disk space? And tell me what does it mean that you erased "Windows.old"? If you have got any old Windows installed it could be just old things hidden like swap file or hibernation file or profiles or something. Note that if you leaved "program files" they contain any files installed programs previous Windows version.

Hi,System restore reserves a portion of the drive based on a percentage (roughly 12%) of the total drive space, not a percentage of the used space. This will likely account for a fair percentage of your missing space. Best of Luck,Rick Rogers, aka "Nutcase" Microsoft MVP mvp.support.microsoft.com/ Windows help www.rickrogers.org"T5"
