Slow task bar and explorer memory leak

Posted by admin on Sep 1st, 2006

I upgraded my dual core p4 2.8 PC with 2Gb of RAM and a 300Gb SATA drive to Vista Ultimate.Generally the performace is quite good except:The task bar and start menu frequently lock up. I can double click icons on the desktop and program start fine. If there are any running programs I can alt+tab to them fine but if I try to click on the task bar I end up waiting quite a while. Also explorer.exe seems to use a lot of RAM upwards of 85Mb even when it is just sitting there doing nothing.I am getting very frustrated. I have googled but have not found anyone with similiar experiences.Anyone have any suggestions?I would really hate to do a clean install as I have a lot of software I would also have to reinstall and configure.

Explorer uses quite a lot of ram even for me. Try using Windows Adviser to see if all your software is compatible with Vista. A simple piece of software which ties itself to explorer can and will use a lot of ram plus whats 85 megs to your 2 gig ? If this was an upgrade try removing the user and adding it again that fixed about 78% of the issues i was having with programs, and crashes with dllhost, rundll etc.. for reason i can't explain but it worked.Chris

I checked the RAM and no errors.A couple of other symptons and details: 1. The PC is a member of a 2003 domain 2. It takes at least 34 full minutes to log on"cpet" wrote:
