Names order in Windows Mail dictionary
Posted by admin on Aug 16th, 2006
In OE I could display the names in my dictionary in several ways. First name first or last name first. In Windows Email I don't see an easy way to do this. I had to go through all the contacts and change each one.Am I missing something??

This may not be relevant, because it's not about any dictionary. But as far as contacts in the Windows Contacts folder, you could click the Last Name column heading to order them by last name. If you don't see a Last Name column heading, rightclick any column heading and choose Last Name from the dropdown menu that opens. Or, if there's no Last Name on the menu, click More Options at the bottom of the menu and choose Last Name in the Choose Details dialog box that opens. "BAD"

"BAD" No, not that I've seen.Getting it to display the Lastname, Firstname just isn't there that I've seen. It seems that Firstname will always be displayed first. You can get it to display that way in the Preview pane by editing the contact and clicking on the Full Name. There are all sorts of sorts but, not matter what you do that I have seen will change the way it's displayed.

You don't have to change the First Name, Last Name order of the field names to list them on the screen or alpabetical order. Try this:Open Windows Contacts. Choose the Details View. Click the Last Name column. They're in alphabetical order by last name Switch to any other view. They're still in alphabetical order by last name. You just have to click the Last Name column heading in any view to alphabeize them by last name. "Bob"

If you're talking about the 'Select Recipients' dialog that is shown when you click 'To:' in a new email, click on the sort arrow that appears when you mouseover the 'Name' header. It toggles through FOUR display states:FullName ascending FullName descending Last, First ascending Last, First descendingIf you're talking about viewing the Contacts folder, the name of the contact is based on the 'Full Name' field. If you edit a contact, it's found on the 'Name & Email' tab. It has a drop list that allows you to select 'First Last', 'Last, First' or 'Last First'. You can also type any text you like as the Full Name it won't change the First and Last fields. Good Luck,Keith Microsoft MVP [Windows XP Shell/User]"BAD"

If I understand this correctly, I have to go into each and every contact I have (200 or so) and edit the name field. I can do that, but it would be a lot better if there were a way to make a global change (like there is in the OE address book). And since OE is still my primary email on my desktop, that means I have to repeat this process every time I update my contacts by exporting from OE to Vista Mail. Surely this is not considered an improvement! Are there plans to fix this mess?"Keith Miller MVP"

Add First Name and Last Name to the column headers (right click the header and select them). Then drag the new columns in whatever order you want. "Bob"

Yes, I see what you are suggesting, but I have a couple of problems. When I export from OE, the program does not populate the first name and last name fields in all the Mail Contacts. Don't know why, because I checked several of them and those fields are there in my OE address book. The result is that my list shows about 3/4 of the contacts with those fields blank and sorts on the full name field alphabetically by first name. At the bottom, where those fields are populated, the list works as you suggest it should. There is no obvious difference to me between those that come across with all fields populated and those that are missing first and last names. Another issue is that the export program seems to combine addresses from different identities into a single file, sometimes duplicating entries in the Contacts file, but this is minor.<.>

I'm pretty sure that when you export an OE address book, it gives you a choice over which details will be included. My export brought all the details over.Gary VanderMolen "Bob"
