BF2 shutdown with memory error

Posted by admin on Oct 24th, 2006

The last twice I've been playing on vista64 rc2, I've had BF2 freeze after an hour or two of online play, and found a message box behind the game saying "BF2 has experienced a memory error". Anyone else getting this, possibly after applying update patch 1.41 ?

Are you running BF2 as Administrator? "jacko"

The few times I had BF2142 freeze and crash because of a memory errors, it was because I had the pagefile too small. With 2GB of ram, I'm able to run a 512MB pagefile. Under Vista, ince it uses the pagefile alot more, if I have anything smaller than a 768MB pagefile it will crash.Check your disk space, and maybe hard code your virtual memory to something like 1024 if oyu have 2GB of ram, or maybe 2048 if you only have 1GB. [This followup was posted to microsoft.public.windows.vista.games and a copy was sent to the cited author.]In article , jacko says... drivers. Roll back to the BETA ones or use the onboard sound and the problem disappears. ConorLight travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.........

I've always have over 3Gb for the pagefile. You just can't seem to have too much virtual memory. "Dale M. White"

Well, this is open to debate, but I disagree. If you have over 2GB of ram, you really don't need VM at all. Under XP, I can run (and normally do) with no Pagefile whatsoever and be just fine. Vista, deciding to change the way the game is played, now seems to demand a larger than expected pagefile. But at least you ruled out the pagefile problem, though I have heard, but never seen myself, that people with heacy fragmented drives (and thus pagefiles) fixed some gaming issues, by getting rid of the pagefile, defragging the HDD and then putting the pagefile back or moving the pagefile to a seperate disk. on the contrary the more ram you have, the more pagefile you need (1.5 times the amount of ram to be exact with micrsoft) support.microsoft.com/kb/314482/enusHave you run a check over your physical RAM? It normally is the obvious things that get overlooked and missed :) Download a free memory testing utility that will test each bit to ensure there are no nasties for you Cheers "Dale M. White"

Like I said, it's debatable. I can play BF214, FEAR and a whole slew of games for hours and hours with no pagefile whatsoever. And as I stated under XP, I normally don't run a pagefile and haven't for years. I challenge anyone with 2GB of ram under Windows XP to give it a try and see what happens. There are a few games that seem to mandate a pagefile, Company of Heros was one that wanted a 768MB pagefile and that was just at the install screen.I don't follow the point of testing every bit on my memory. What does that have to do with needing a pagefile ? Plus I don't need a free memory tester, I have Supreme Commander, Load up an 8 player map and play for about an hour and I'm at 95% memory usageI'm aware that Microsoft suggest 1.5x times memory and for the server side of the house there is no problem with doing such a thing. And I'm sure there are certain programs like video editing that will use the pagefile space, but that really goes back to not having enough physical ram.I will note that Vista changes this, has it seems to be thrashing away on my pagefile when only 1GB of ram is in use. It's another reason I don't like Vista. For me as a gamer, it takes more to do the same thing under Vista, then it does under XP and so far, Vista doesn't do anything better,in fact, it does everything slower. "Nathan Sheppard"

Got the same memory error can't be the sound drivers of my terratec 5.1 upgraded them just a minute ago, but i still get the same error.. I get a bluescreen when trying to increase the virtual ram from 2gb to any other number.. (got 2 gigs ram) and would like to get the virtual to 4+.. I've read some other ppl having the same problem with the bluescreen.. hope, this gonna be fixed soon!"Conor" wrote:

If you have 2GB of memory, increasing the pagefile isn't going to help you much. if you're using 4GB of pagefile, then you've gotten else wrong. If nothing else, try getting rid of the pagefile altogether and run the game a bit, or if possible move it to another hard drive. You might need to look at some of the other programs you have running, Maybe there is some conflict. And then as one fella learned a while back, it turned out the problem was with him memory."Thalandor"

Maybe, i ll get myself 2gig extra and replace the old ones and see what happens.. will do the "nopagefile" first anyway. Here's the exact error msg:"Header: BF2142 Memory Error Content: memory.dll: all alloc attempts failed for size 4810013"(It's only in bf, everything else runs well)"Dale White" wrote:

Hey, you can't post a BF2142 error in a BF2 thread.Anyways, I just played an hour or so (about 2 maps) under Vista64. I even turned off my pagefile to see if I could recreate an error I use to get before about low memory, but not this time.Memory.dll is a part of the battlefield game and not windows, maybe it's corrupt or something ?"Thalandor"

Are you getting the "memory error Insane" message ? Here's a thread on it. This is XP and not just Vistatotalbf2142.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5866&highlight=memory.dll%3A+sanity+check%3A"Dale M. White"
