1280x720 not available in games

Posted by admin on May 9th, 2007

Hope someone has an answer for me on this one:I have a Samsung 60" DLP TV plugged into my PC via VGA (Radeon X1800 XT). In Windows XP, I was able to choose 1280x720 resolution in most new games. In Vista Home Premium 64 Bit, I am able to choose 1280x720 on the desktop, but the option is not available in any games (despite the fact that I know they offer it as I've played them in XP). My monitor is listed as Generic PnP. Samsung does not appear to have any drivers for TVs.What's a guy to do? I can run the games at other resolutions just fine, but I'd prefer to run them at 720p. What is the problem? Is it the ATI driver? The lack of a TV driver? Or what?

Is there an option with these games to run "Same as Desktop" for the resolution? Also (and I just have to state this) games should not lose ingame menu based resolutions.I've never seen that under any OS with any driver configurations.A couple places where you might find good support (if no one here can help) are driverheaven.net & rage3d.comBoth are great ATi based communities that a lot of actual ATi driver engineers post on."p1ut0nium"

There is an issue with some games not listing all avalable resolutions with the ATI 7.2 drivers, NHL 07 only has 640 x 480 avalable, It may be a ATI driver problem. ATI is aware of this issue."Shane Nokes"

Ah thank you. Fortunately, I am upgrading to an nVidia 8800 in a few weeks hopefully their drivers won't have the same issues. I thought I was going crazy I just knew these games has 1280x720 before I switched over to Vista. Thanks again!"Darkelldar" wrote:

"p1ut0nium" You're upgrading to nVidia in the hope of avoiding Vista driver issues? *snicker* Oh boy. You're in for a *treat*. Not.Both ATI and NVidia have problems of one kind or another with Vista. If you spend just 10 mins searching here you'll see plenty of tales of woe about problems with NVidia drivers, for example. My advice, for whatever it is worth, is that the only two reasons you should buy a new video card for use with Vista right now are as follows1) The old one is on fire. I mean literally on fire. And it doesn't work afterwards. 2) The old one simply doesn't work in any acceptable way in Vista (whatever 'acceptable' means to you. Robert Moir rhymeswithgeek.com

Actually right now ATI's issues are minor such as this weird resolution bug.nVidia's on the other hand, flickering all over the place in different games, flatout BSOD's in several cases, I've even heard of a case with an 8800GTS model where for some odd reason the driver caused a serious enough looping crash that Vista had to be reinstalled. The odd thing is the vid drivers are supposed to be usermode only so they shouldn't do this.I know ATi is actually following the usermode guidelines properly, I don't know if nVidia is or not though (note the reinstall I heard about was not using a WHQL driver) "Robert Moir"

"Shane Nokes" Perhaps. But ATI are to thank for the BSODs I've seen on Vista RTM. Ouch. Wellp I'm using the drivers ATI are pushing on the support site and it's managed to BSOD for me here. To be honest, Video was ropey on XP when it was first launched, too, so I am not overly shocked here.

Hello, I am NOT sure if it is just me or NOT. However, I purchased Windows Vista Ultimate the very FIRST day it came out (actually I waited in line at BEST BUY to get the software), and it works FLAWLESSLY..!!! However, I read these stories here about having problems and they are just totally blowing me away.. I have had Vista Ultimate for 2 months now and I am having absolutely ZERO (0) Problems with my system.. I do not know if it is my graphics card or my system, but, I upgraded from an HP Media Center m1270n computer system which had an ATI card in it.. I upgraded my hardware to a nVidia GeForce 7900 GS graphics card prior to the Vista Ultimate software upgrade and added additional memory.. Is it just me, or am I Lucky.. Windows Vista Ultimate is fantastic.. No problems.. I only have a 4.8 rating but it works fine with everything I run on it..Ken"Robert Moir"

As a matter of fact, I have enjoyed flawless operation of Windows Vista x64 until I installed ATI CCC 7.3, recently. I get a BSOD before the bootup sequence is completed. If I uninstall everything and then install ATI CCC 7.2, I have no problems at all. Too bad about ATI's techinical support, though, as I've never been able to speak with someone who knows more than me about the issues I've tried to get resolved.Tyler Cobb, MCP

  11. anonymous Says:

Tyler, there was a bug in the 7.3. What you have to do is load up 7.3, then before you reboot, look in services and see if there is a ATI External Event Utility. If there is disable it and reboot as normal. If not, reboot, go into safe mode and disable the service. You will be able to load as normal.Paul Clemmons, OEM MS System Builder Wicked Machines, Home of Extreme Gaming Systems www.wickedmachines.com "Tyler Cobb"

Thank you! And to add to this information, ATI also released a new (beta) version of the 7.3 drivers that fixes the problem without having to disable the service. Look for it in their knowledge base at their website.Tyler Cobb, MCP"Paul Clemmons"
